Short answer: A professional ceramic coating in McHenry County costs $895 to $1,595 at Unicorn Details McHenry, depending on your vehicle and whether you choose a 1-, 3- or 5-year coating. Because you can’t see a coating’s quality once it cures, the shop you choose matters as much as the product.

If you’ve searched “ceramic coating near me,” you’ve seen a lot of shops and a lot of promises. Prices vary, claims vary, and the product itself is invisible. Once a coating cures, a well-installed one and a poorly installed one look about the same on delivery day.

That is the real challenge with ceramic coatings. You are paying for work you can’t inspect, so you are trusting the person who did it. This guide covers what a ceramic coating is, what it costs in McHenry County, how long it lasts, what it doesn’t do, and how to judge any shop before you hand over your keys.

What is a ceramic coating for a car?

A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer, typically silica-based, that is applied to clean, polished paint and cures into a thin, hard layer bonded to the surface. It makes paint hydrophobic, so water beads and rolls off. It adds resistance to road salt, bug acids, bird droppings and UV, and it makes the car easier to wash.

It is different from wax or a sealant, which sit on top of the paint and wear away in weeks or months. A coating is semi-permanent and is measured in years. If you want a side-by-side look at the options, read our guide to ceramic coating vs. sealant vs. PPF.

How much does ceramic coating cost near me?

Here are our current ceramic coating prices at the McHenry shop (October 2026):

Package Cars & crossovers Trucks & SUVs Time at the shop
1-Year Protection $895 $995 About 6 hours
3-Year Protection (most booked) $1,095 $1,195 1 day
5-Year Protection $1,395 $1,595 1 day

Every package covers the paint, exterior glass and wheel faces. Glass and wheels always receive a 2-year coating, whatever paint length you choose. Each coating includes a one-step machine polish, a written warranty, CARFAX reporting and free detail spray for the life of the coating.

Price is driven by vehicle size, the condition of the paint and how many years you want it to last. Prep is most of the labor. A coating is only as good as the paint under it, so if your paint needs more than a one-step polish, that correction is quoted separately as part of a Restore Detail or paint correction.

Is ceramic coating worth it?

It is worth it if you plan to keep the car for several years, you want it easier to keep clean, and you drive through Illinois and Wisconsin winters. Road salt, bug acids and bird droppings are harder on paint than most people expect, and a coating makes that contamination easier to remove before it does damage.

It is less compelling on a car you will sell in a few months, or if you are not willing to wash the car properly. A coating reduces maintenance. It doesn’t remove it.

How long does a ceramic coating last?

A ceramic coating lasts as long as the package it was installed under, assuming it is maintained. At our shop that means 1, 3 or 5 years on the paint. Longevity depends on three things: the product, the prep underneath it and how the car is cared for afterward.

We recommend a ceramic maintenance wash at least once a year. It’s a mild acid wash that clears the bonded contamination that builds up on a coating so it beads again. It runs $65 for a car and $75 for a truck or SUV and takes about 45 minutes. For more detail, read How Long Does Ceramic Coating Really Last in McHenry County.

What a ceramic coating does not do

A ceramic coating does not stop scratches, swirl marks or rock chips. For rock chip protection on the front of the car, paint protection film is the right tool.

A coating also does not repair existing damage. It bonds to whatever paint is underneath, which is why polishing before coating matters. And it doesn’t mean you can skip washing. Bugs in particular still need to be cleaned off promptly, because acidic residue can etch even coated paint if it sits.

Why trust matters more than the product

With most services, you can see the result. With a ceramic coating, you can’t. You can’t see how thick the layer is, whether the paint was properly cleaned and polished first, or which product went on. Two cars can leave the shop looking identical and behave very differently in year two.

That makes a ceramic coating a trust purchase. The risk isn’t unique to any one shop. It’s what happens anywhere when prep is rushed: coating bonds over contamination or swirls and locks them in, coverage is uneven, or the product doesn’t match what was promised. You usually find out months later, after the warranty conversation has already gotten harder.

So whichever shop you consider, including ours, ask for proof of the work, not just a price.

What a trustworthy ceramic coating shop should be able to show you

  • A written package. The coating length, what surfaces are covered and the warranty terms, in writing before you book.
  • A clear prep process. Ask what happens before the coating goes on: wash, decontamination, polishing and surface prep.
  • Which coating is going on and why. The shop should explain it in plain terms for your car and how long you plan to keep it.
  • Before and after photos of your car. Not stock images. Your vehicle.
  • Training and certification. Independent certification and manufacturer-trained installers show the shop has been vetted.
  • Verifiable reviews. Real, recent Google reviews from customers who had work like yours.
  • A track record. How long they have been coating cars, and how many.
  • A guarantee. What happens if you aren’t happy.

Ceramic coating FAQ

How much does ceramic coating cost near me?

In McHenry County, a professional ceramic coating at Unicorn Details costs $895 to $1,595. That range covers 1-, 3- and 5-year coatings on cars, crossovers, trucks and SUVs. Price depends on vehicle size, paint condition and coating length.

Is ceramic coating worth it?

It is worth it if you plan to keep your car for several years and want it to stay cleaner and easier to wash. It is less useful on a car you plan to sell soon.

How long does a ceramic coating last in Illinois?

A professionally installed coating lasts 1, 3 or 5 years depending on the package, with a ceramic maintenance wash recommended at least once a year to keep it performing through salt and winter driving.

Do I need paint correction before a ceramic coating?

Paint should be polished before it is coated, because the coating locks in whatever is underneath. A one-step machine polish is included with our ceramic coatings. Paint with deeper defects may need additional correction, which is quoted separately.

Does ceramic coating prevent scratches or rock chips?

No. A ceramic coating makes paint easier to clean and more resistant to contamination, but it does not stop scratches or rock chips. Paint protection film is designed for rock chip protection.

Can I ceramic coat a new car?

Yes. New cars are a good candidate because the paint is in its best condition, though most still benefit from a polish first to remove dealer and transport marks.

How do I wash a ceramic coated car?

Hand wash with a pH-neutral car shampoo and clean microfiber, and avoid automatic washes with brushes. Get a ceramic maintenance wash at least once a year.

How do I know a ceramic coating shop did the job right?

Ask for the package and warranty in writing, the prep process, before and after photos of your car, and the shop’s certifications and reviews. A trustworthy shop will show you without hesitation.

How long will my car be at the shop?

A 1-year coating takes about 6 hours. 3- and 5-year coatings take a full day.
