About Unicorn Details McHenry
You love your car. We get it.
Maybe it’s the truck you’ve put 200,000 miles on. The classic you finally pulled out of the barn. The daily driver that hauls your kids, your tools, and your whole life. Or the dream car you waited a decade to finally park in your own driveway.
Whatever it is — it matters to you. And when it doesn’t look the way it should, you notice. Every. Single. Time. The hazy paint. The swirl marks dancing under the parking lot lights. The stained leather. The cloudy headlights. The water spots that won’t wash out. It bugs you. It should.
You’ve thought about getting it detailed. You’ve also heard the horror stories. The shop that left more swirls than they started with. The “ceramic coating” that washed off in three months. The interior “cleaner” who left water rings on your leather and a chemical smell that wouldn’t quit.
So you waited. We get it. That’s exactly why we built this shop.
We’re not a side hustle. We’re a profession.
Unicorn Details McHenry is one of only two International Detailing Association (IDA) Certified Detailer Skills Verified shops in McHenry County. That isn’t a sticker we bought online — it’s a credential earned through documented training, testing, and a portfolio of proven work. Behind that certification is 18+ years of professional detailing experience — nearly two decades of figuring out exactly what works on every kind of paint, leather, plastic, and finish that rolls through our doors.
The owner and operator also brings an undergraduate degree from Western Illinois University and a Master’s from Aurora University to the work. Why does that matter to you? Because this is a craft we approach the same way we approached our education — with discipline, research, and a refusal to stop learning. Detailing chemistry, surface science, and product technology evolve constantly. We make it our job to evolve with them, so you don’t end up with last decade’s methods on this decade’s clear coat.
We’re family-owned. We treat your car the way we treat our own. We figure out the right pad, the right product, the right method for your specific car — not whatever’s left over from the last job. We know the difference between a wool pad and a microfiber pad, between a cutting compound and a finishing polish, between cleaning leather and quietly destroying it.
We charge what we charge because real work, done right, costs what it costs. When you pick your car up, you’ll see exactly where every dollar went.
Here’s how working with us is supposed to feel.
Step 1 — Reach out. Tell us what’s going on with your car. What’s bugging you. What you wish was different. What you want it to look like.
Step 2 — We walk it with you. We inspect the paint, the interior, the trim. We tell you honestly what we can fix, what we can improve, and what isn’t worth your money. No upsell. No mystery.
Step 3 — We do the work. You pick your car up looking like the version of itself you’ve been picturing. In a lot of cases — cleaner than the day you bought it.
No tricks. No bait and switch. No “we’ll have it ready by Tuesday” turning into next Friday.
What’s at stake if you keep waiting.
Paint damage doesn’t fix itself. UV oxidation eats your clear coat. Bird droppings etch into the finish. Sap bonds and bakes in. Stains set deeper into upholstery. Headlights yellow until they fail inspection.
Every season you put it off, the fix gets more expensive — and at some point, the damage stops being fixable. It becomes the new normal you live with. The car you used to be proud of becomes the car you stop washing because what’s the point.
You don’t have to settle for that.
What it looks like when you don’t.
Your truck looks the way it did the day you drove it off the lot. Your classic earns the head-turns it deserves. Your daily driver feels new again every Monday morning. Your dream car gets the protection it needs so you can actually drive it — not garage-queen it.
You walk up to your car in the parking lot and smile, instead of wincing.
That’s the work we love. That’s the work we built this shop to do.
Built on something bigger than cars.
Unicorn Details McHenry isn’t just our business — it’s our home community. We give back to McHenry by donating to several local charities, because we believe a business should leave the place it operates in better than it found it. When you trust us with your car, you’re also helping us keep that promise to our neighbors.
